Every parent wants their kid to excel in sports-but raw talent isn’t enough.
If you want to set them apart from the competition, here's what actually works:
1. Play Multiple Sports (Not Just One)
The best athletes aren’t just specialists-they’re well-rounded movers.
Kobe Bryant credited soccer for sharpening his footwork and agility on the basketball court. Research backs this up-multi-sport athletes:
- Develop better coordination
- Have fewer injuries
-Adapt faster in competition
What to do: Encourage them to play a different sport this offseason. It will make them a better all-around athlete.
2. Fuel Their Passion-Not Just Their Performance
The best athletes don’t just work hard-they love the process.
If they enjoy what they do, they’ll push themselves harder and stay in the game longer. You can help by:
-Keeping it fun
-Celebrating progress, not just results
-Supporting them, not pressuring them
What to do: Focus on passion over pressure. A motivated athlete will always outperform one who’s just going through the motions.
3. Start Training Early (But Train Smart)
The earlier they start training, the more natural speed, power, and coordination they’ll develop.
But not all training is equal-random drills won’t cut it. They need structured, age-appropriate training that builds the right skills at the right time.
What to do: Get them into a program designed to improve strength, speed and movement-like Frwdstrong Youth Strength & Conditioning Program.
4. Build the Athlete First, Then the Specialist
Early specialization leads to injuries and burnout. The best long-term success comes from developing general athleticism first.
That means training:
-Speed & agility
-Strength & power
-Coordination & balance
A strong, fast and resilient athlete will always have an edge over kids who only practice their sport-specific skills.
What to do: Prioritize total athletic development before narrowing their focus too soon.
Give Them the Ultimate Advantage.
Great athletes aren’t just born-they’re built. Set them up for success by developing their passion, athleticism and work ethic.
